Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons, it's a classic - and more than one friendship has hung in the balance when I've presented a friend with "a classic". Until they start reading it, that is.

Angela's Ashes - all those hungry babies it was so depressing! My father comes from Limerick, and he confirmed that Angela's Ashes is entirely authentic - which makes me feel even worse.
