Hedonism - and feminism
Women's bestsellers look as sheltered as a Victorian nanny in comparison, but here too it is sophistication that earns fat advances. Marian Keyes, a 32-year-old accountant, received a "large six figure sum" for Lucy Sullivan is getting Married (Mandarin, February), a hangovers-and-snogging story which will take any urban female irresistibly back to her mid-20's, yet has a vein of romance running through its street-cred bravado. It belongs to the smart gossip-with-girlfriends genre which is transforming 1990's women's fiction.
