Dubliner Marian Keyes has already outflanked rival Maeve Binchy in the Irish bestseller lists with her hit books Watermelon and Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married.

This is all the more impressive given a long battle with alcoholism which she uses to great effect in her new novel.

Rachel, an occasional dabbler in the odd recreational drug, is shipped home from New York by her concerned Irish family.

After an attempt to get some sleep goes horribly wrong, she finds herself with the prospect of spending time in The Cloisters, a rehabilitation centre.

She naively envisages her stay there will be for relaxation purposes only and considers herself an observer as distinct to an addict.

Keyes' first hand knowledge of the dangers of addiction adds an extra dimension to a tale about the ordeal of having to acknowledge drug dependency.
