Mapping out a good read

Any Woman will tell you that the male population is generously littered with rats.

But Marian Keyes has created a King of the species in feckless James, who stoops to one of the lowest gambits imaginable in walking out on wife Claire on the very day their first child is born.

Left with all the ingredients which would justify a bad bout of post-natal depression, Claire goes home to her family.

The way in which she rallies and begins to realise that losing her husband is akin to shrugging off a nasty virus is expertly handled.

And the surprise that Claire has for jilting James when he does deign to put in a re-appearance is eminently satisfying.
