January 2012

A shy and tentative hello, my amigos. I’m mortified I’ve been off the air for so long – nearly 2 years – and if you’ve all lost interest, don’t worry at all, I don’t blame you. I really had no expectation that I’d be out of action for so long, It’s been a very strange time, I hardly know where to start, except that I kept waiting to get back to normal and I’m having to accept that the old normal is gone forever and that I’d better start liking the new one!

I’ll tell you more about my ongoing unpleasant mental states as and when but lets talk about lovely things for the moment! First and foremost – did you watch The Killing? Wasn’t it fantastic? And wasn’t the second series fantastic? Isn’t Sarah Lund just amazing? And are you watching Borgen? And isn’t it really strange and hilarious that loads of the same actors are in Borgen as were in The Killing. Like, the other night, when Thyss Birk Larssen popped up as the Minister of Defence?!! I MEAN!!!! And actually it took me a while to realise that Birgitte Nyberg’s ridey husband Philip is Officer Strange from Killing 2. Also do you think Katrine in Borgen is trying to ‘out-jumper’ Sarah Lund? I mean, that stripey cardigan she wears just leaves me speechless. Good job she’s so beautiful is all I can say.

And what about Wallander? I am IN LOVE with Krister Henriksson (apologies for incorrect spelling.) Oh, how I love him. What a compassionate, humane, gorgeous funny man he is. Apparently there’s a new Scandinavian series coming soon called The Bridge, in which a murder takes place on the bridge that links Sweden and Denmark, so BOTH Swedish and Danish police forces are involved. Sadly though, actual Sarah Lund and actual Kurt Wallanders won’t be in it. But still! It’ll still be in Sweden and Denmark, which suits me down to the ground.

Yes, I’ve watched a phenomenal amount of telly over the past while. It has been a GODSEND my amigos, a veritable GODSEND. I’ll stop talking about it in a minute but is anyone watching Homeland? A kindly person who I won’t name in case they get into trouble, slipped me an illegally downloaded disc of the whole series and I DEVOURED it. It is so so so so so good and Claire Danes is BRILLIANT, just BRILLIANT. Also there is a very attractive older man in it, her boss Saul Something, I googled him, his name is Mandy Patinkin and apparently he’s famous and is on broadway all the time and is an actual singer and I felt like a big eejit, acting like he was my find.

As well as watching outrageous amounts of telly, I’ve been going to the movies a fair bit. This is something I almost NEVER did, because I never seemed to have the time, but now I’m grateful to have something to distract me and to fill the time. I went to The Artist, which was adorable and very sweet and the dog was brilliant but perhaps it’s not the work of genius that the Harvey Weinstein publicity machine would have us believe. What else is on? Oh yes, The Iron Lady, which I would rather set myself on fire than go to (even though lovely Harry Lloyd is in it). I have a visceral hatred of Margaret Thatcher, VISCERAL, my amigos, she did so many truly horrifying things and it really really annoys me whenever people hold her up as an example of the success of feminism, when she espoused NO female characteristics (random selection: empathy, inclusivity, reasonableness, a capacity for remorse). She was NOT a woman, she was barely a human being. And the awful thing is that now I hate Meryl Streep also, just for playing her sympathetically. But never mind!

Moving on to nicer things, last August, ‘The Praguers,’ ie my brother Niall, his wife Ljiljana and their divine children Ema (11) and Luka (10) moved to live in Ireland!
Ema and Luka ready for schoolJust down the road from Himself and myself, which is very very lovely for us. My brother Tadhg and his wife Susan got a new dog Bubs, so now they have 2 dogs (you might remember they already had a boxer Katie.) And Oscar, who was just newly born to my sister Rita-Anne and Jimmy the last time I posted is now 20 months and a little tank. Him and his brother Dylan who is 3 and a half (collectively they’re known as Dyscar) are hysterical, great fun, both red-haired, so sometimes they’re called The Redzers.

So what else is happening? Well, I’ve a book on baking coming out in Feb. Yes, baking. I think I mentioned the last time I wrote that, out of the blue, I’d started baking cakes because I was so totally unable to do anything else and I found it comforting and it got me through the day. Every cake I made, Himself took the most wonderful photos – really quirky and cute and fun and it was a project that sort of kept us both going because it’s been such a weird time and because I wasn’t able to work, neither was he, because our jobs are so intertwined. I can’t exactly say when we decided to try to put it together as a book, but somehow it’s happened and even though they didn’t use Himself’s gorgeous photos because the lighting wasn’t of the right quality, it’s still adorable. It’s very chatty and fun. It’s called Saved by Cake and I’m giving all of my Irish royalties to the Vincent de Paul because of the brutal hardship being experienced by so many people right now.

Also – and I find this amazing – I’m almost finished a novel. Well, I am actually finished, I’m doing the editing and I can’t tell you how incredible this is because for months and months and months in the past 2 and a quarter years I’ve been unable to get out of bed or concentrate on a sentence or motivate myself to do anything. But somehow, in pockets of time, when I felt less terrified and terrible than usual, I managed to write this book and the strangest thing about it is that it’s really funny. It’s about Helen Walsh of the Walsh family that I’ve written about in Watermelon, Rachel’s Holiday, Angels and Anybody Out There. Helen is the youngest sister, the ‘bold’ one and she’s a private detective and she’s on a missing person’s case. She’s looking for Wayne Diffney, who used to be in Laddz (they’ve a boy-band, they’ve popped up in other books, Sushi for Beginners, The Other Side of the Story and The Brightest Star in the Sky.) I’ve my friend AnneMarie Scanlon to thank for the plot, she was always a fan of Wayne’s and said he needed a book of his own and I had no idea how to go about it, but it’s worked! It actually really does function as a thriller. But it’s also a love story – 2 love stories in fact. And it’s dark, quite a bit dark. But honest to god, really funny. It’s taken me an appallingly long time to write because I’ve been hors de combat for long periods, so often I’ve forgotten what I’ve written, then I stumble over a bit and think, ‘but that’s HILARIOUS’ and I’m sorry if some nasty journos (and we all know who you are and you have my compassion) will lift this quote and headline it, ‘Boastful boozy author’ etc, but that’s the truth of the matter. It’ll be out sometime in the autumn and it doesn’t have a name yet, but I’m working on it.

Speaking of booziness, I celebrated 18 years of sobriety on January 18th, so not all is bad. Despite the tough times in my head, I haven’t had a drink and I haven’t killed myself and Himself hasn’t done a runner on me with a sane person. Mind you, Himself has done a LOT of running. He has become superfit and runs up the sides of mountains in Wicklow and is completely brilliant. Himself hillHe buys all these magazines called Running Blokes and Really Hard Running In The Rain and suchlike and reads their surveys for the best waterproof jocks and keeps introducing me to new things like ‘gaiters’ (to protect your shins from mud) and ‘eyebrow guards’ (so your eyebrows don’t interfere with your aerodynamicness) (okay, I made that one up) and suchlike.  And you should SEE him, he looks absolutely gorgeous, I mean, he looked gorgeous anyway, but he looks extra-gorgeous now.

Marian and OscarAs for myself, I am the size of a house and I really am. I used to say I was the size of a house and at the time I thought I was, but in retrospect I wasn’t really but now I actually, truly am. But it can’t be helped, it’s the anti-mad tablets I’m on, also the fact that I am over-exposed to cake, also the fact that I used to exercise a fair bit and most days, it’s a genuine struggle to get as far as the shower. It makes me sad to be a fatso because I feel I can’t wear nice clothes because everything looks so horrific on me, but on good days I have hope that it won’t be like this forever and I just have to be patient and wait it out. And although I don’t think I’ll ever be taking out a subscription for Hard Running for Girls, I still manage to do my hillwalking with Himself and our friends Kate, Malcolm, Hilly and Mark.
Walking with the PraguersMind you, there’s less of the hills these days, and a fair bit more of the flat, but Himself continues to find these gems of walks for us. Who knew there were so many great walks half an hour from Dublin? There’s one with all these strange wooden sculptures hidden in the forest and another with quotes from Seamus Heaney dotted here and there. Magical.

Now, let’s finish on a happy note. I’m going to list things that cheer me up and that might work to cheer you up too.

Tom Dunne (on Newstalk.) Yes, my love for him continues unabated, he always, always puts a smile on my face. Himself loves him too. In fact, everyone I’ve ever met loves him. I live quite near to him, and one Wednesday he said, “Bin night tonight” and it was OUR bin night that night too, because obviously we have the same bin collectors!

Grazia. Oh, how I look forward to Wednesday (we don’t get it until Wednesday in Ireland) and I find it almost spooky the way my opinions and those of Grazia coincide. For example, I was RAVING about the beauty of the lampshades in Borgen and next thing you know, Grazia is praising not only Borgen, but the lampshades.

Katy Perry’s blue hair. How does she do it? Is it a wig? Would I be able to get it done? I would LOVE blue hair.

Got To Dance. Esp Davina. I LOVE Davina, I have always loved Davina, I will always love Davina. Also Ashley Banjo. Did you see the bit where he pretended he was just down the disco with one of the non-hopers, a woman in her 40s who was a good dancer but not good enough and he just started dancing with her – oh my GOOD CHRIST!!! The sexiest thing I’ve seen in a long long long long time.

Clinique’s Chubby Sticks. Like a balm, a gloss and a lipstick all in one, only better. I need MORE COLOURS!!!  Invent more colours please, I NEED them.

Dermalogicas Ultracalming Serum Concentrate.  It has some mysterious illuminating effect on my face because whenever I wear it people say, “Oh I’m so happy to see you looking so well, it’s so obvious that you’re getting relief from your darkness.” And I could be feeling as wretched as usual, but people INSIST that I’m not, that I’m evidently on the road to recovery, that they only have to look at me!

And on that cheerful note, I’ll be off. I hope all is well with you, that you haven’t been suffering too badly from January-itis, it is a nasty, nasty condition. Saved By Cake will be out around the middle of February and I’ll have a couple of videos up on various sites, I’ll keep you informed.  At http://www.facebook.com/TheBookBoutique there are some behind-scenes-snapshots from the shoot for the bookjacket and my not-exactly-conventional footware...

And here's a video of the family helping tidy up after making the videos.

Thank you for all your unceasing good wishes and good will, I am truly grateful

With lots of love

Dear Marian and Himself, I was so happy to see a long awaited email from you. What great news that you're feeling able to write and let us know of all the goings on. Well done on your sobriety, what a great achievement that is. Good luck with the books, I can see a few winners on the horizon! Give Himself a pat on the back for all his physical endeavours. Lots of love, Jan

Marian, I cannot tell you how truly delighted I am to read this post, not only because it means the darkness has thus far been abated, but also because you cheer me up no end! I have read and re-read every single one of your books. Whenever I feel like I need a dose of happiness and sparkles, they never fail me. You inspire me to look on the bright side and be gentle with myself and other people. Thank you for being so spectacular.

Fantastic to hear your back in action. Soooo good to hear about the new book. Helen Walsh's career as a private detective has been inspiration to me over the years. I've said for the last few years I'm givin up the day job to sit in bushes with a long lense camera. I lost my job a year ago and had a rotten year but I know someday I'll be a private detective lol. As a mother and now grandmother I have had plenty practice. At least this year I have somthing to look forward to. Your new book yee ha oh joy!!

Oh my goodness Marian, so many wonderful comments from your fans! I too have been watching and waiting for your return and when I saw the add on the telly about you being in the Daily Mail, well I jumped and screamed dancing around the kitchen! I am so delighted for you that things are looking up -at last. I think its just fantastic that you speak so openly about your depression and you give a voice to a topic that in Ireland has been voiceless and silent for so long. You are so brave and just amazing. Every best wishes and God bless you always.

Marian, I am BEYOND overjoyed that you'll have not one, but two new books this year! You are my absolute fave and I'm constantly checking to see when you'll have anything new. I've reread all of your books numerous times, and I've yet to find another author who can make me laugh out loud one minute and have me crying the next. A gift like yours is a rare onw, and I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better. Best wishes! xoxo

Never have I been so giddy to see someone I dont really know, as I was to see you when my mum came down to my house waving an article about your baking that was in the paper.
I love love love 'The Killing' and 'Wallander' and I'm the only person I know who watches it, all my family and friends think I am mad when I rave on about it. (I liked Ab Fab when Edina said she was watching 'The killing' boxset and she could now speak Danish. That really made me laugh as you think you can by the end of the series, even though you cant).
Anyway good to see you, you've been missed very much. Can't wait to check out your baking book. I love baking. (How gushy am I in this message!! I told you I was giddy) xxx

We have missed you, selfishly, and look forward to the new book. Much love, Diana & Emma Morris, South Africa

The Plot:Barry Shaw's whirlwind journey through life was shaped by the growing demands of a mulitiude of disorders, which meant he tended to clean things repeatedly and aggressively, before they had the chance to murder him! Barry thrived on routine. If it hadn’t happened before, it was unlikely to happen ever…until he collided into her that is. On that fateful day, as he walked to work, stepping from the centre of one pavement stone to the next, he crashed into Sandra Wiggins, who had also been discreetly avoiding the dreaded cracks. It was lust at first sight. Love would have to wait. Apart they were just weird, but together, they were pure mental! This is the story of two human lovebirds, destined to spend their calamitous lives together…until something extraordinary occurs that threatens to decimate what remains of their limited sanity. Welcome to the New World Order, created when Barry met his Miss. Match!

Am so pleased to hear that you are feeling better. As a dane (yes, yes Borgen and the killing and all that) I haven't had easy access to information on you and have feared that you were in a very bad place. I truly hope you will feel loads better soon, and I look forward to your next book (mostly the one about Helen because a book about cake is just to dangerous, since I am not a hard running girl either).

Marian-
The law is that in order to Shine so brightly- we have to know our shadow- seems that you have been in that space for a while. Delighted to see you are bouncing out of it and working some magic creating some opportunities to serve (with book) and share the joy of your creativity with your new book. I was at your book reading in Adelaide some years ago now- and was brought to tears by the number of people- including myself- who had clung to your books, as a way to get through our own dark times. A thousand thank you for picking yourself up and getting back into a book!
We all love you sooooo much Marion!

Ms. Keyes

It was so nice to read your newsletter and how honest you are with the world.

I love reading your books because it really feels like you are sitting right next to me telling a story.

When I finished reading Brightest Star, I sighed. It was such a fulfilling story for me.

I love the Walsh sisters and can't wait to read about Helen. I think I'll start reading Watermelon again and work my way through the books until the Fall release.

Thank you

Dear Marian,

Last week I read the news that you were publishing two new books during 2012. Reading that you have managed to stay this functional is admirable, knowing what depression does to someone. So congratulations on these big accomplishments. I have already pre-ordered the baking book, and look forward to getting both of them. :)

I just read this interesting news from the USA's National Public Radio website that I wanted to share. I thought you might like being aware of this (see links below). I really really hope it helps not only you but thousands of other people who suffer, suffer, suffer.

Posted by Linnieh on 01/02/2012

So pleased you are feeling better, Marian. I know how hard it is as I suffer with depression myself. But you look great, so don't worry about the weight gain. I'm on anti-depressants too and yes, I've gained weight from them as well. Or maybe it's all the chocolate I eat! Being depressed just makes me crave it more.

Wishing you all the best,
Marie xx

Phewf!!! We knew if we stood by, that you'd be back. :-) So fun to see your newsletter again. Congrats on all of the 'wonderful' that is happening in your life right now. You deserve it. How about a title contest for your latest novel? I think both Helen and Wayne would approve.;-) Sending a big virtual hug! Welcome home...

Hello Marian. I am sure you have already tried this (given your extensive list of treatments) but have you explored the possibility of being Bipolar? The agitation and anxiety are definitely part of the picture and anti-depressants and anti-psychotic medication can often make the problem worse. If you have explored this, then great, but I know a lot of people who have been misdiagnosed with depression and it turns out they are bipolar. This website is brilliant so I hope you can check it out: http://www.psycheducation.org/index.html. Quote from the wonderful psychiatrist who has created the site: "If you have depression or anxiety that has not gone away with antidepressants or psychotherapy, or if you haven’t had those treatments but already recognize a cyclic energy part of your depression, you definitely need to learn about Bipolar II" I wish you health and happiness.

Dearest Marian,

What an awesome surprise to wake up to this morning! I am tickled pink to read words written by the great Marian. We have missed you Bella <3
I wrote to you once, telling you about my mother who suffers from depression, it pains me to read the hardships you have faced, as I know them all to well :( BUT the greatest part, you and my mother are feeling better! I think I will have a smile on my face ALL FRICKIN' DAY!!!
You have the warmest place in my heart, I know you realize how much we all love you xo

Posted by LesleyD on 01/02/2012

What a great surprise to find a new blog post. The way you have dealt with depression has been inspiring and I can't wait to see the cake book. 18 years of sobriety is also amazing. However - do you really go hill walking with someone called Hilly? That might have made my day

Posted by Gingerteadrinker on 01/02/2012

It s soooo nice to hear from you! when I saw the newsletter in my inbox I felt relieved, happy, confused and a bit scared - all at the same time. Is it really her? Is she better? Or is it her team, and she is not better?? After waiting one day before opening the mail I finally found out that it was really you. Thank God! I have thought about you several times within the time you were not writing newsletters. And didn't know what to write. And feeling bad for not being able to write anything helpful, cheering, supportive... Now you are better and that is so great I finally found some words to let you know. I guess no one forgot about you and we are all so much looking forward to even reading a new novel! WOW!
I hope you feel better and better every day from now on. All the best to you! Thank you for being back - and letting us know!

Posted by NoraSchum on 01/02/2012

OMG I get depressed and love baking and have been a bit obsessed with borgen, the killing, and couldn't settle without watching the whole of homeland too. Is it a whole package do you think? "sorry, you get to get depresseð but the pay-off is exquisite taste in telly & cake & have lots of both". Kid's books do it for me too & I've some Wallander and Parks & Recreation to catch up on.

Can't wait for the baking book & great to hear from you here.

The important question is though, what to watch now after Homeland?

Posted by DeeB on 01/02/2012

Dear Marian, such a relief to have you back. Do you know how much you are loved and how much pleasure your writing brings to us all? You make me laugh out loud (not an easy thing to do) and the next moment you make me cry. Please take care of yourself. Sympathise with the cake dilemma. New M @ S here in Pembrokeshire. Bakery too tempting for words. Am expanding by the day! xxx

Oh Marian,I`m so excited about the new book,I`ve been waiting for one about Helen for years!!I have suffered from postnatal depression twice now,I`ve felt exactly like you did and I was on the happy pills too, which also made me put on weight but I came out the other side and I`m glad you have too.All these things are sent to us for a reason. You should know that you inspire me A LOT. I started writing articles when I had my PND, and even had one published in a local magazine,I was Trés proud of myself. Everyone thought it was really funny, and I got a lot of inspiration from the books about the Walsh family!!I`m glad you`re feeling better and can`t wait for the new books.Lots of Love and Happy Thoughts!!!xxxxxxx

Yay! Welcome back from NZ Marian! And congratulations on 18 years sobriety. Hope you are feeling better, getting well, and taking the time you need to get well and get back on track. Your fans will wait. While you've been away, my daughter (21) has been reading your books...at an alarming rate....and addicted! She'll be as thrilled as I am to hear you are on the mend and a new book pending. Your books are hilariously funny and so close to the truth. (I'm from Glasgow originally). Thank-you for the being the author who got me reading books.....and my daughter lol!
Might I just add....you are looking fantastic. All the very best :-) Lindsay

Greetings from Sydney Australia! I hope you are feeling better with every day Marian. I just love the Walsh family, I think Mammy Walsh is my favourite, and have also been waiting patiently for Helen's story. Your books always keep me smiling and occassionally I randomly remember something from one of them, for example the cross-dressers in This Charming Man, and I have a little giggle to myself. Thank you :)

Marian, I know you don't know me from a bar of soap but I was moved by the honesty of your Newsletter. You poor sausage. It certainly sounds like you have had such a rough time and I really hope things are feeling brighter for you now. Take Care of yourself and be gentle on yourself too. Ps. You look gorgeous, don't worry. Ps2. I sort of relate to the running up mountains, my husband is a Dubliner and bikes up mountains. And discusses lycra and clip-on's with complete strangers.

Delighted you are back with us, funny last week myself and my mam were only wondering how you were. Looking for ward to the new book. Having depression is an awful disease and the sad part is no one can see you have it and therefore dont understand. Please look after yourself.

Hi Marian, It's fantastic to hear from you again. I was writing this morning and got a bit stuck and as you are my favorite author, I thought, I wonder if there is any word on Marian yet. And lo and behold, you've written a great newsletter. It is so lovely to have you back with us. I had already heard about your cake book, and it is such a lovely surprise to hear about the novel too. Aren't Dyscar funny in the video with eating the icing - my son never touches the cupcake - just the icing too. As for the anti-mad pills - yes they're a nightmare for putting on the weight, and combined with wanting to try out all the cakes in your book, I guess I shouldn't start the next diet til March!
I'm delighted to hear that, even if you aren't completely on the mend, you're getting used to the new 'normal'. Keep creating all those beautiful things - try jewellery next - especially silver clay - you'll love making pendants especially ones with your family's fingerprints. It's good fun, pretty and precious.
Again, I'm delighted to hear good news from you. Onwards and upwards, Imelda x

Posted by ilawson on 31/01/2012

I'm so delighted you're feeling brighter Marian, and that you've written the Helen book! I've been waiting for it for years, and have been re-reading all the other Walsh books during the past few months. I'm a writer, and you continue to inspire me with your work. Please get on Twitter! Vicki xxx

Posted by emma1980 on 31/01/2012

Yaaaay!!! So pleased to hear you are feeling somewhat better. I can now read my copy of The Brightest Star in the Sky, which has been gathering dust on my bedside table. For some reason, I didn't want to read it in case it was the last book you wrote, so I decided I wouldn't look at it until you were back 'online'! Hope 2012 will bring all good things for you :-)

Posted by KylieE on 31/01/2012

Marian - It's so wonderful to see you back. Am I the first one to comment on your new newsletter? Cool! I was doing a bit of writing myself, and got stuck, and as you are my favorite author, I thought, I'll just see if there's any more word on Marian - and there it was. I'm so delighted you have written another novel and book. Anti-mad pills put loadsa weight on me too - they're a b******s for that, and as cakes are now my 2nd favorite food next to chocolate, I guess, I'll try and start the diet again in March (after trying all the recipes in your book).
I started making silver jewellery to make something creative and beautiful and precious during negative times - have a go - especially with silver clay - Take fingerprints of your nephews and nieces and make them into little pendants for everyone - you'll enjoy it, and they are so beautiful, and you'll have them to keep forever and compare when they've grown up.
Thanks so much for the newsletter.
You're so inspiring, especially having written something funny during the dark times. Good on you! And may there be many more.
Looking forward to reading your new releases, Imelda

Posted by ilawson on 31/01/2012

...sorry I forgot to say, if you don't know about it already please check out EFT tapping as it also known. It is a kind of hynosis crossed with accupressure and is really, really effective for so many ails in the mind and body. I was thinking it could be good for you to alleviate some if not all of your depressive symtoms. You do look like a bit of a mentaller tapping away at parts of your body whilst you talk to yourself but IT WORKS!!! And you don't have to do it in public!! Also it looks a bit feathery stroke/lentil casserole but please don't let that put you off!! Brad Yates and Magnus Tapping have fantastic videos but what would be even better would be to find a practicioner who can guide you through it. Sometimes the effects are dramatic and instant and sometimes they just creep up on you over a day or two. Ok, just a thought!xxx

Dear Marian,

A little hello from France, I am SO happy that you're feeling better, I was checking the site only a couple of weeks ago and was worried.
Your books have lifted me up so many times in the dark times of my life. I always need to know I have one more left I haven't read yet just in case. I started with Last Chance Saloon. I still have the Brightest Star in store ;o). What is just magic is that I always seem to read the one that is just perfect for me when I read it. And they have made me understand such important things about my life along the way. I read Anyone Out There in my darkest hour and it helped me go back to the surface. For some reason I only read Rachel's Holiday last summer during a horrible week and it just helped me so much too!!!!!!! And your words, your humour, GOD, I learn so much from your books, I am always underlining stuff (as I am a froggie, you know...;o))
OH, and WAIT! JOE ROTH!!! This man and the mat that he sends her , that was just the best. So until it wasn't possible on my new phone, I had the invite "Joe Roth is coming" for yeeeeeears as I would turn my phone on. I had it exactly for 8 years, Marian, 8!!! And he came! Right after the new phone, actually, two years ago. And one day, because I had told him about this, he set me an appointmment saying "Joe Roth is coming" whereas he was sitting right in front of me in a café. IT guys, you know... ;o) He's just one of the few/ many? HIMSELVES on the planet!
So Maryan, see, you're just magic, and I am sure I am just one in the _zillions_ of people your books and articles have entertained AND helped. And you take the time that you need, we'll be there supporting for you even if it's from a distance. And you know what? I love baking...;o)

Tons of love to you and the people around you xxx

Hi Marian

Just wanted to wish you all the best in your battle against depression. Your books have helped me out of my darkest days. You are one of my favourite authors (alongside Patricia Cornwell and Jodi Picoult) and just like an episode of desperate Housewives, I can't wait for the next installment. I am delighted that you are working on a new novel and I love the Walsh family characters. You have made me laugh A LOT over the years and God willing you will laughing a lot very soon. Marian, seeing this newsletter in my inbox today just made me so happy. I've rung my friend and sister to announce the impending arrival of your new book. We are very excited here in Melbourne!
Also, I am somewhat astonished life has passed you by without coming under Mandy Patinkin's spell, but if that is the case can I suggest that you must must must sit and watch 'The Princess Bride'. It is an '80s flick and Patinkin as Inigo Montoya is just a brilliant character. It's a delightful film! Watch it!
Anyway, thanks for making my day :)

Posted by Quinitch on 31/01/2012

You have no idea how HAPPY I was to see this post!! I've been checking back regularly because you're newsletters have always put a smile on my face. I'm glad you're feeling better and here's hoping you continue to feel that way. All I can say is THANK GOD you've written a new book.. You have no idea the sh*te I've had to read! No other author holds a candle to any of your books.. So much so that I've just re-read all of your books.. I just finished 'Anybody Out There' and I thought to myself..'Helen really needs her own book, her screen play was just amazeballs' and, voila! Now she has one! I will be counting down the days until its released. You really have made my day Marian.. Take care x

So, so, so happy to hear that you're doing a bit better, Marian! My mother struggles with the same issues, and is dealing with her own slump right now. It's hard to watch, knowing that there isn't much you can do to help, except be there when you're needed. I'm glad that you've been well enough to do some writing, and that there's another Walsh story to look forward to! Best wishes and I hope things keep moving up and up for you!

Hi Marian. Finding an email from you in my inbox brought immediate tears to my eyes. It is wonderful to know that you are in a good place and doing well. As someone who worships baking and has the culinary school pastry diploma to prove it, I am THRILLED that one of my favorite authors is about to give me CAKE! :) I also want you to know that you are truly an inspiration. Being very depressed myself at the moment (several emails to explain that one), knowing that things will never be the same and trying to figure out what the next chapter of my life should consist of, you remind me that there is always light at the end of the tunnel and I thank you for that. Be well and all the best to you and yours, Lisa Ferber, Staten Island, NY - tatasmurf@hotmail.com

Dear Marian,

I'm an avid fan of your writing and love being able to receive your newsletters to get me through until your next book is released.

I have to say that being such a public figure, your openess about your hard times, and your joyful ones too, are so refreshing. I haven't had the easiest 12 months, but I have to say that when I saw the email in my inbox that you were back, it was like greeting an old friend.

Once again, you have been able to put a smile on my face at your familiar style and your Irish-isms!

I hope that you keep recovering and keep inspiring those of us who read your work to hope for a happy ending.

Lots of love and hugs from this stranger in Australia.

Amber

P.S. I love chubby sticks too and when I saw an advert for them when they were first being released, raced straight from the hairdressers to Debenhams to buy mine, only to find out that they weren't being released for another month! I'm nearly run out of my first, but just love it! Great minds really do think alike :)

(Private message, please. . . .)

Hello Sweet,

I am unbelievably happy to hear from you again. I'm in my forties--and my friends are wilting--quite a bit. And I'm talking about very strong women. It's obviously not just menopause--but that Bloody Well takes its Toll, of course.

I've noticed, though, that women in their 50's and 60's seem to really calm down and get their balance. I'll be there soon--and I'm looking forward to it!

Good strong friends for me--that's the the key! And a pet (I live in Paris , so I can't). Also, trees. Now, unfortunately--and you will laugh at me and call me silly--I have too many men coming up to me in a typical park. But the reason is that I am from California (with Beautiful Irish Ancestors--let's now Bless Great Aunt Mona and Great Aunt Doe)--so I certainly don't look French. And, well, the Drageurs target the foreigners first.

No Compliment, in fact.

OK.

Many points to be made, I suppose, --but one is Marian, left alone in a Park in Paris, would be the target of a Drageur (Pick up artist). I challenge her to go to Parc Monceau alone in Spring. (Forget Winter: that is the only time I have Peace and Quiet.) Like Marian, I look young. Deadly for those Quiet Librarians trying to read a Book. . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjPpPaODDt8

If you were my neighbor, even in Paris, I would bring you over a loaf of freshly baked bread every day.

Do love you, Marian. . . .

Dying to see your baking book, Im terrible at baking myself so maybe I'll buy it and give it a go. Take Care Grainne

Thanks so much for your update. I have just moved my library into lovely new shelves, and only yesterday was saying to a fellow fan of yours that I really hoped that I would need to make more room for new Marian Keyes novels. I am so happy that there are new books on the way. Thankyou, thankyou! I love the anticipation of the upcoming book release dates.
About Mandy Patinkin, I first came across him in the lovely movie The Princess Bride. If you haven't already had it suggested by a million people, please go look for it. Guaranteed to make you smile!
Best wishes from a grateful fan.

Actually, my one and only comment is that I Love Miss Marian--have missed her dreadfully--and sometimes feel my fate linked with those I love--absurd as that might sound--so ludicrously now, therefore, happy, for a million lovely reasons--to hear from her again!

Brava, the Marian!

Dear Marian
I'm so pleased to hear you're feeling better, and extremely excited about your new book - my friend and I have been waiting for a Helen book!

Also, Mandy Patinkin (Saul Berenson in Homeland) was in The Princess Bride (surely you love that movie?!) and got to deliver the line "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
Apparently he considers that to be his favourite role.

Anyway, thank you for making my day!

Best wishes

Dear Marian - I am SO happy to hear you're finally writing about Helen. I absolutely adore the Walsh family and have been waiting for years for Helen's story. I discovered your work many years ago and promptly fell in love! Your books have provided me with many hours of laugh-out-loud entertainment (I've read them all more than once) and I've told everyone I know about you. Please know that you are loved and will always by one of my most favorite writers.
Sincerely, Susan L. Davis

So glad to see you in my inbox again. Cannot wait to read the new books. Always wanted to suggest one for you. It is called Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride. Don't be put off by the strange name. The cause of depression is bad gut flora (the good bacteria have been overtaken by the baddies when you are on antibiotics and then they multiply on sugar/alcohol and cause depression) I think that the special diet in the book will help to get rid of the bad gut flora and will make you better. It will at least make you healthier :)

How in the world can you say that you are the Size of a House? ? Are you Begging for Compliments! What Positive Rubbish! Don't Show that Photo and Say that you are the Size of a House! Every Worthy Woman will Disparage You!

God! Glad I got that off my chest!

Well, so Pleased to hear (and see) that my Sweet Marian is back in Form. I never used to watch TV either--but now I'm riveted to game fare such as The Apprentice, Celebrity Big Brother, etc.

I, who don't have a TV. Youtube has been my Downfall.

I nearly Died over Denise Welsh last Week--and--Honestly and Truly--Had No Sleep. I walked Down the Streets with Slumped Shoulders. . . .

You, Marian, probably just say POOF to her--my Darling Denise with all of her foibles--the way you really wish to draw each and every blood droplet out of M. Thatcher and roast it on the spit! Was she really so Bad?

Possibly, Possibly--don't take my Blood, Miss Marian!

Love you--and so pleased to hear from you again!

Hi Marian. I can't even begin to tell you how I felt when I saw your newsletter sat in my inbox. I have been desperately worried about you and have thought about you and willed you to be better every day. I even wrote to This Morning and asked if they would find out if you were ok (they never got back to me but ah well haha) I'm so glad you're feeling the way you are and you have for certain got one buyer for your new baking book. My two favourite things, Marian Keyes and baking all rolled into one, I can't wait! I also am so pleased you've managed to write another Walsh sisters book! I'm sure I speak for many fans out there when I say that the Walsh sisters are my favourite all time characters! I hope that this newsletter will be the first of many to come. So, so glad to hear from you. And a new novel on the way--fabulous!
Mandy Patinkin once did a show in my little town (Huntington, WV) via Marshall University Artists Series. He was great--just him and a piano player. Just before the intermission he said he wanted the audience to really show him their love by giving him things--wanted them brought right up to the stage. People took up take-home bags from restaurants and other trinkets. Finally, a woman brought him her baby! Just a tiny thing all wrapped in a blanket. He said, "Shhhhhhhhh, someone just gave me a baby," and that was the beginning of the intermission. I know for a fact he gave the child back as she was later in kindergarten with my youngest son.
Please continue to feel well!

I am in my 4th year and like you have had a barrage of different situations to face in that time and like you have done it sans booze. I guess you have just got to keep putting one foot in front of the other. Sending much love and pink thoughts. - Elizabeth, Melbourne Australia.

One thing ghat helps me when I have an... Ahem depressive episode is reading your books. Lol don't think that will help you though, surely that would just be classed as editing!

no worries. so glad you're back and with a new novel to boot. i can't wait to read it. i'm a pubbed author (to, er, no acclaim whatsoever) and it is reassuring to learn that authors i admire greatly also have fallow years and crises of confidence and discipline. stick with it -- we are waiting ;- )

Hi Marian

So pleased to hear that you are on the road to recovery. You're right about learning to love the new normal. It takes time but it's all part of cracking the tyranny of the madness.

I had a breakdown in 2010 so can vouch for the whole malarchy of feeling like a porker and making the most of the good days. I'm right where you are so don't feel alone! I reckon it's de-rigeur when you're on the anti-mad meds but I guess it has to be an improvement on counting out fistfuls of paracetamol doesn't it?

Anyway, if you need a laugh feel free to check out my (hopefully) funny take on depression in my blog www.thekrakenwakes.blogspot.com. There's a fair bit of sweary ranting too but that's just my post-breakdown therapy. Well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Don't forget that you're never alone, OK? And while we have never met I'm always on t'web if you need a rant or a laugh. Us nuts really do have to stick together.

Take a monster amount of care of yourself.

Dear Marian, I was SO SO excited to see this newsletter in my inbox! I've been checking frequently over the past year to see if there's any news about how you're doing (yes, that sounds creepy...) and I've been wishing all the best for you. Your work makes so many people so very happy. I'm also thrilled to know that your newest novel is about Helen! I've been waiting and waiting for that one! Good, healthy, patient wishes for you! I'm so sorry to hear it's been so bad. And glad to see you back, and delighted to hear there's a new book on the way. And careful with the fatso comments, there's a lot of people more fat than that out there who might be made sad by your relative skinniness, Missus! Anyway, without a bit of fat, what can you bounce back with? xx

Lovely to 'hear' your voice Marian! To be funny these days in the world of fiction is v much appreciated: too much of life is serious. Helen's character will be a welcome break from all of that; I speak on behalf of myself and I am sure many of your readers. Life has its stages and any unwanted effects of medication etc are all just a stage; a phase that can pass if you like and you can be sure (as there has been in 'new-normal' time) that each one of the stages will change. Things and people change just as much as you would not have believed before, (if that makes any sense). Lots of love! Susannah, xxx

Thank you, Marion, for being open about your mental health challenges. It is so good to read and know I'm not the only one - and I'm sure there are others. Your books are delightful and I so appreciate that the characters have depth to them and aren't just ditzy airheads la-la-ing through life.
Thank you for being you! Can't wait to read your new books. Warm regards, Kat in California.

Great to have you back through the newsletters, Marian. Looking forward to 'Saved by cake' as well as your new novel.Love your books and have bought every single one of them. Stay well, Marian, stay happy!

Marian, it's said that if there is a silver lining to suffering, it's that it makes us sympathetic, compassionate and, in the end, able to find humor in situations we otherwise wouldn't be able to. This is obviously the case with your own suffering over these past couple of years...and those of us on "the other side of the story" are grateful for the gift of yourself that you give to us. It helps us through our own dark days. And how courageous you are to do so, even if you don't believe it - you are! So, simply put, thank you. You've helped more people than you'll ever know, myself included. Keeping you in my prayers and gratitude, Luane

So glad to hear you are on the up....
I know exactly how you are feeling.... Have had depression myself since 2010... Not good :o(
And my 'anti-mad' pills have made me gain weight too.... Believe it or not it's been your books that have kept me going..... especially during those long, cold sleepless nights, which are many as Im sure you know...
Anyway, keep smiling Chuckie-Egg and know you are loved XxX

I do hope you get back to the original you, but even if you are never quite the same then I will adore you (not in a creeepy way, but in a normal-fan type way!) always. And i hope you are able to adjust to the new you.
I CAN'T WAIT for the new book about Helen. I'm just re-reading Rachel's Holiday (for about the 100th time) (because i needed something comforting and familiar and hilarious to read) and I thought 'I wonder if there will ever be a book about Helen' and it turns out that YES there will be.
I genuinely hope you are on the road to recovery.
With all best wishes

But the really brilliant news is that you have done a book on Helen! I have just finished re-reading my 'walsh' girls book (for about the zillionth time) and was thiking as I finished Anna's story, wonder if we'll ever get to hear Helen's. I'm so excited! And congrats. I know that the last number of months have been a struggle for you. Its a demon illness that can strike at any time. Keep battling on. I hope that you can come out the other side of it

Cannot wait to read the next book!

Dear Marian, I am ferociously passionate about 2 things in life: books and cake. As the creator of both, and now indeed as a fancier of Ashley Banjo (good god, surely the Most Gorgeous Man of 2012?), you are my undisputed hero.

I read quite a few books in your absence and have it on good authority that there is not another author on the planet as funny as you - you are simply one of a kind.

I am a new mom and relate entirely to living in fatso-ville. If you lived near me I would promptly deliver a sympathy cake to your door...

Seriously though, the candour with which you share your own personal struggles is both refreshing and deeply moving.

I am so glad you're back. You've been missed!

I would just like to say that I'm so glad you're back in commission. I think I know some of what you're going through, as I also suffer from craziness & have been on drugs for years. Everytime I think I can go off of them, I discover that I can't and will likely be on them forever, but I feel so normal on them, I guess I'll just have to accept it!
I also would like to compliment you on the lovely cleavage you seem to have developed. I'm quite envious! I have also put on weight over the past several years, but I don't have anything like the cleavage you've got! In fact, anything I have that even remotely resembles cleavage, is really just a crack in my fat on my chest...or aging skin, I'm not sure which.

Wow, I am trying to get geared up to go into work and what a happy surprise -- a newsletter from you. I have suffered from depression in the last 2 years so I appreciate your openness (not a word?) about what you've experienced. My Dad also is suffering from Alzheimer's and, although you didn't touch on it much in your newsletter- I know how devastating that is. I will definitely look for your baking book. Not that I need any more calories in my life, but I'm inspired by you looking for different directions to take your life in. I wish you all the best. I hope to read more of your novels, but more importantly, I wish you happiness. Thank you for your words that have helped me get through some of the same issues these last few years. xox

Dearest Marian, you are an inspiration.

I had tears in my eyes as I read your newsletter, yet recognise more than one or two similarities.

I too have suffered with depression in the past (my now EX-husband called me his mad wife, hence the "ex" husband bit ....). I always thought I was only capable of baking cakes resembling satelite dishes but the challenge of baking overtook me, and the satisfaction and praise became like an opiate ... suddenly I became obsessed by The Goddess Nigella and have had a love of baking ever since.

I'm really looking forward to Saved By Cake, and shall be pre-ordering my copy NOW!

I can wait for your new book - it's top of my Christmas list already - but I would just love to see you on Twitter: it's a medium that was made for you - the art of 140 character quips.

Awwww g'won!

Chin up chuck, there's millions of us devoted fans who love you!

Dear Marian,

When I read your newsletter in January 2010 I was about to start reading The brightest star in the sky, which I had already bought and was dying to dive into! But I decided to hold this off until you were back from your darkness. I felt it would be selfish of me to enjoy your reading while you were going through such a hard time. It just didn't seem fair. So here I am, 2 years later, and it still hasn't been read, it's still waiting on my night stand. It wasn't easy not reading it.

I must admit I cheated a little bit... I got three of your books for a friend on her birthday... who, by the way, read them back to back, and then bought ALL other books right away and also read them back to back. Including The brightest start in the sky. ;) So when she came back a week later having read all of your books (she is a fast reader and she was on holiday), we started talking about The other side of the story, which is one of my favorites, and I couldn't help but buying it for my kindle and reading it again. It's such a perfect book!!!!!

Last week I read the news that you were publishing two new books during 2012. Reading that you are managing to stay somewhat functional is great news, I think, because I know what depression can do to someone. And I don't know when I will actually read the new books,... I would love to know you are a bit better before I do, but I have already pre-ordered the first one, and look forward to getting both of them. :)

All this has been on my mind for two years, but the reason why I decided to post it today is because I just read this interesting news from the USA's National Public Radio website. I thought you might like being aware of this (see link below). I really really hope it helps not only you but thousands of other people who suffer, suffer, suffer.

All the best,
Ana

how truly lovely to hear that blue sky is starting to break through - and am amazed that another novel has surfaced during this time. what an achievement!
btw, Mandy Patinkin is indeed fragrant and most wonderful as Inigo (hhello. my name is Inigo Montoya. You killt my father. Prrreepare to die.) in the Princess Bride. If you've not seen it, do. A gem from 1987. xxx

It is SO GOOD to find a word from you in my email again! I've thought of you often during these past two years - I went through a separation and now we're back together, so things do work out...and you may be "the size of a house" but you're still beautiful! Just curvy! Keep climbing!

I'm so happy that you're back Marian and I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am to hear you've written a book about Helen Walsh :) I've been waiting for this for years! The Walsh sister books are works of genius and it's great that your fans will be able to revisit them again. I'm really looking forward to Saved By Cake too and I read in the paper a few months ago that you were donating your Irish royalties to the Vincent de Paul which I think is incredible kind of you. Congratulations on your recovery and keep staying strong! :) MA XX

Dear Marian,
I love your books. I just finished Sushi for Beginners last night and was looking at your website yesterday! I thought I must be imagining it when I received the e-mail saying you'd written a newsletter. It was a lovely read, some gorgeous photos and great news. I'm delighted things are looking up and cannot wait to read more from you. Félicitations on the 18 years of sobriety, that's absolutely amazing. All the best to you and your family, especially your parents. By the way, you still look fabulous!

Hi Marian, so lovely to receive your newsletter and hear that things are better for you than they were, but sorry to hear about your dad. Great news about your new books, I'm thrilled that the new novel is about Helen Walsh as I'm currently re-reading the Walsh sisters novels in order one after the other, I'm halfway through Angels at the moment, as I've missed reading your work so much since reading The Brightest Star in the Sky when it was first published. I've got all your books and intend to re-read them all over the coming months as they're wonderful to read again and I'm finding I can relate to some characters and their experiences much more now that I'm older and have more life experience myself. Good luck with the baking book and the editing of your new novel, I can't wait to read it. Best wishes to you and I hope you continue to feel better, Kelly x

Great to have you back, since last time I have read the brightest star, although I got a bit distracted for 18 months I finally got back round to it and loved it, I finished it with a lovely warm feeling inside! Things like that make me emotional now I have my own baby, hence the 18 month gap! Looking forward to the next one in autumn, take care x

Hello Marian, I have read your blog and you made me laugh! Just wanted you to know that my husband and myself have two little places (not posh but nice) in a small place called Calitri in southern Italy. Its lovely there and if you want to visit you are most welcome to go. We dont hire it out but like it to be used and I think it is just the place for you to do your walks, meet like minded Irish people who have bought there too and to cap it all off there is CAKE!! You would love it I am sure and if you wnat to catch the bus from Roma there is a direct one there. Look on the internet and see for yourself, I know if we had had bought there before I was ill I would never have had a breakdown but thankfully I am great now. Be happy now and get well soon, God bless you and himself Bernie

Hello Marian, I didn't know you were feeling unwell but it makes me very happy to hear you are better now! I have read all your books about the Walsh family and find so so so many similarities with my own slightly dysfunctional family, and I have been wondering if/when you'd be writing about Helen.

So sorry to hear about your dad's Alzheimer's - my grandad had the same disease and it sure puts pressure on the rest of the family as well as being so sad. Gosh, it's difficult saying the right things, but you'll get through it together.

All my best wishes to you.

I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am to read your newsletter and hear how things are on the up for you! I have been a devoted fan for years, since the very 1st chapter of watermelon, and have loved every word you have written since then. Spookily, I was just talking about you with a friend yesterday, saying how worried I was about you (and how strange it is to worry about someone you've never met!) I’m so glad things are getting better for you!! I cannot wait to read your baking book, not to mention Helen Walsh’s story!! (Could not be more excited about that one!!) Look after yourself and know that you have an army of loyal fans out here who are delighted to hear from you again and are constantly thinking of you and wishing you well!!

OK enough about that.
I'm very excited about your new books coming out this year, thank you so much for taking the time to think about us even going through though paths. I recently lost my mom (still young) and it's really difficult to copy, so I send my best wishes to you and your family.

I was sent here from Twitter, and I simply had to comment. If only to express admiration, awe that you keep plugging at it, kept fighting your brain, kept on going. I would be awful if you hadn't, truly awful, and I cannot say strongly enough how impressed I am.

I also wanted to remind you, though I am sure you already know, that you are not alone. You've got your readers, of course, but outside them the digital world is full of all of us people who can emphasise with bits and pieces of your experience. Each and every person feels depression differently, but the one thing we are all in agreement about is how horrible it is, and how terrifying it is to think about it coming back. But you seem to be doing well, seem to be out of the woods, and if you ever need anyone to remind you or that, us little creatures online will be jumping up and down for the chance.

Posted by LaurenEACooke on 30/01/2012

Marian,
I'm so happy you're back! I've missed you! I love all your books, and I too, suffer from depression. It's awful and takes everything out of you. I feel for you, and I hope you are on the upswing.

Also, you are FAR, FAR from the size of a house!! Don't put yourself down, only makes it all worse. And your brother Niall is quite cute! As is the rest of your family.

Can't wait for your books!

I am so so so so so so so so pleased to hear from you again (yes it's like you're part of my family!) I have really missed your newsletters and quite often (honestly, it is true) I think about you and wonder how you and Himself are going, and now I know :-)
The last thing I was expecting to read was that you'd written a BOOK. Woo Hoo! I have a feeling it's going to be your best yet, and you know what, it's probably good you were "off the air", no fans asking how you're going with it etc. etc. As well as baking cakes you could just get on with it. Brilliant! I am looking SO SO SO SO forward to it. I love Homeland too. It started here last week and I totally agree - Claire Daines is absolutely fantastic in it. I hope whatever "anti-mad tablet" you're taking is doing the trick. I've been on anti-depressants for 17 years - tried many times to stop and gave up trying to stop 7 years ago. I've been on Zoloft for 7 years - actually went up from 50mg to 100mg per day 2 years ago - best thing I ever did. Once again, I am so happy to hear from you again, yeah I know thousands of others get your newsletter too, but that's how wonderful your newsletter is, it feels so personal. Love, Sharon xxxxx

Welcome back and if that's the size of a house...well you must have tiny houses in Ireland. You are lovely and so is your family. I'm so sorry about your father though. But you look wonderful and I haven't felt this good since my best friend from high school tracked me down after 20 long years. Bless you Marian!

Oh Marian how glad I am that you're back! The funny thing is that just this weekend (last of Jan 2012) I was visiting Dublin for the first time in my life and I kept thinking about you a lot and wishing you were feeling better. I myself have also been diagnosed with depression and know how awful it is. So it makes me unbelievably happy that you seem to be feeling a bit better. I'm looking forward to your cake book as well as your new novel. I just simply LOVE the way you write and compose stories. Hopefully we'll meet some day and I'll be able to say this to you face-to-face but for now take care of yourself and belive in nothing being forever not even the foulest of moods. Through your writing, you have managed to crawl into my heart like family. I'm looking foward to the two new books! Yes, especially Helen Walsh's! She's very different from the other girls. Hi Marian, it's wonderful to hear from you again. I just wanted to let you know that I'm so do sorry to hear about what a tough time you and your family have been going through for the last two years... My thoughts are with you all, and I do hope you will start to feel better, and that things become a bit easier for your poor mum and dad in time too.
I also wanted to let you know that ever since stumbling upon Watermelon 7 years ago when I was on holiday in Tenerife, I was in absolute hysterics with laughter from begininning to end, and I have been addicted to your books ever since, and read every single one in close succession. They never fail to make me laugh, and keep me completely gripped, in a way which no other authors books ever have. Whenever you have brought out new titles since then, I have been so excited to get my hands on the book as soon as possible :)
No matter how long you leave it in between books, and no matter what troubles you have going on in your life, you will always remain my favourite author, and I can assure you, I will never lose interest in your books, nor hearing about your fascinating life, no matter how much time passes. I find it so refreshing that you are so open and honest about issues that affect so many different people every single day, but that most people don't have the nerve to talk about. I think you are a true heroine, and I really hope things will improve for you a great deal, as you truly deserve it. I loved reading your newsletter, and I am sooo excited about your new book coming out in the Autumn, I can barely contain myself ;) Best wishes to you, and your beautiful family, Carys x

Dear Marian

How WONDERFUL to hear from you again! I love your newsletters, whenever I read it I imagine us sitting and having a chat somewhere and you're telling me your latest news. Not in a strange stalker-fan way, your letters are just so chatty and full of your personality that it feels like we've been friends forever. (Oh dear, stalker-fan statement again...)

Anyways, my father-in-law has rather severe depression that he has just recently finally managed to find the right meds for after more than 10 years. He can't work at all and tinkers around at home. His hobby takes up most of his time and had he taken up baking, we would all have picked up a lot of weight as well! :)

Thank you for finally giving Helen her story, thanks to you I already know what I want for Christmas!

Dear Marian,
I'm so glad you're back. Congratulations!!

Thank you, your Mam and family for being so open about your Dad's illness. Your Mam is surely right - we need to talk about mental health more openly and honestly. Did you read Tony Bates' very frank interview in last Saturday week's Times? I found it very helpful and enlightening, as I struggle with my own past and present demons. In my darkest moments, I try to remind myself: this too will pass. See Eithne Strong's poem "However Long that Dark - Dá Fhad an Oíche":
".. so that now with utter sureness/ I can urge you, beloved human,/ to search out your courage".

Mind yourself, beloved human and bless you and yours,

P.S. Big as a house - go way ow dat!! You're as beautiful as ever.

P.P.S. I love the Wallender books so much that I can't watch the tv version!

OMG !!! You're BACK !!! Uhuhuhu !!! Finally!!! I'm so happy to hear from you, and also to hear about the book on Helen Walsh! Now I can finally read Angels - I've had it for years, but didn't want to read it cause if I did, the Walsh books would be over and I'd be left hoping for nothing! I'm so happy you're back and you're writing, so I'm gonna start Angels NOW !!! Great to hear from you, Marian, hope you get better and better and better and better FOREVER !!!

Oh Marian! Welcome back! You have no idea how much you have been missed! I'm so glad you are beginning to see some light on that long dark road back, I've been there. I was delighted when a new email pinged into my phone as I lay in bed playing a stoopid game as I couldn't sleep - another distraction! And when I saw it was your email, I can't tell you how excited I was! Lots of love to yourself and himself - keep strong. Xxx

Dear Marian,
It's sooo great to hear from you again. It's so weird, because I don't know you but I have been so worried about you, so it's just brilliant to hear that you seem to be working your way to the other - lighter - side. And I almost had tears in my eyes, reading that you have a book on Helen coming out. How brilliant is that! I'm so pleased for you! Congratulations!
Lots of love
Line, Denmark
PS: So pleased that you are enjoying Danish TV :-) :-)

How wonderful to see you back! I just thought you were a lazy blogger, much like me, who isn't even on Facebook yet. 2011 was a tough one; I told my husband we're in a year of transition: our daughter moved into her own apartment, my mother is declining rapidly and my company is being acquired. I understand how hard it can be just to change your panties, let alone be productive. Let's hope 2012 sees us all a little happier, healthier and peaceful. Can't wait for the books. BTW - Mandy Patinkin played Inigo Montoya in "The Princess Bride," i.e. "You keeled my father, prepare to die."

Will the Cake book be available in the US? I hope so.

Looking forward to the new book, too.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I'll keep him (and all of you) in my prayers.

Hi Marian

So glad you're back with us and feeling a lot better. The fact that you've managed to get so far will be a huge inspiration to a lot of people in the depths of despair. I'm hugely excited to hear about your forthcoming projects and hope the successes that this year will undoubtedly bring will help to spur you on even further. And you know that if you have a down day, we're all here to boost you up again! Lots of love, Rachael x

Dearest Marian

It is so wonderful to receive your newsletter again. And to hear that a new book of yours is coming out has sent me into a dance routine right here in my office (good thing I work on my own otherwise people would think I'm having a psychotic break). I'm just SO happy to know that I will find comfort soon in another one of your treasures. Funny, I was just telling my best friend the other day that I can't wait for your next book to come out.

God bless you and your family. XX

Hi Marian!!! It´s so wonderful to hear from you again! I´m so happy you feel better, and so very surprised you´ve got to do so many great things though you didn´t feel good. That´s amazing and you must feel so proud. I´ve been through a bad period too and I know how hard it can be to keep going on. I´ve been baking too, I don´t know if it´s kind of a therapy but it actually feels good to do something sweet and make people around you enjoy what you create somehow. I loved reading your newsletter, I can feel I´m gettin´out the hole too and this is like if someone pushed me a little bit higher. You definitely must feel proud and happy, you´ve got a wonderful family, an awesome man beside you and those lovely kids around eating your incredible cupcakes!! I hope springtime comes into your life with fresh wind and lots of happiness. It´s time to wake up, Marian!!! Congratulations, and thank you so much for your great, inspiring and wonderful work! Kisses:)))))

WELCOME BACK!!! So happy you're feeling better, and so excited there is a novel about Helen finally in the works. I've been waiting for her story for so long - hope Mammy Walsh is still in fine form! You look great in the photos - hardly the size of a house, and - I know from personal experience - there are so many more important things! All the best for the success of the "anti-mad pills". Christmas hasn't been the same without a new Marian Keyes. x

It is soooo wonderful to hear from you again! I Googled you every now and then, hoping for news, and it is great to read your news. Keep battling life, keep writing & baking & walking, and remind yourself that your readers love you whatever size you are. You are an inspiration to a depression prone Dutch wannabe writer slash baking fan, just the way you are! Can't wait for the new books to come out. Take care of yourself. Love from the Netherlands

My grandfathers (all 3 of them had altzheimers...) I know how it feels, but you can always see the bright side of it... Last year I run a dramatheapy group with 7 elderly ladies with alzheimers and we had the best time... Can't wait for the next novel! :)

Dear Marian
I can't tell you how excited & relieved I was to receive an email containing your new newsletter. It's been a long time, & I know I will be just one of many who have been sending silent good wishes to you at a very difficult time. I have been a 'fan' for many years since the publication of Watermelon. I have loved all your books but Watermelon is still my favourite- the one that has been re-read countless times & has seen me through difficult periods (never fails to cheer me up!)
Welcome back Marian, sooo lovely to have you back :)

Welcome back! So good to hear from you! I've been thinking about you every so often and hoping your well after being through some horrible times myself in the past.

As for being the size of a house, I know what it's like - I'm currently going through a period of struggling to lose weight due to having to have an implant in my arm that helps endometritis get better but makes it impossible to lose weight (I even ran the Great North Run!!!) I'm just focussing on getting fit with lots of exercise, refusing to give up cake and hoping later in the year when I get the thing out it'll all fall off!

Can't wait for the books to come out! And so glad you're back!!! xxx

Its great to have you back!I'm so glad your feeling better and am really looking forward to Saved by Cake and the new novel. I read rachels Holiday about twice a year whenevr I need cheering up. Its the only book that makes me laugh out loud no matter how many times I read it. Me and my sister still quote bits out of it!
